Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will not resign
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that he will not resign following corruption accusations against his wife Begoña Gómez made by a union close to the far-right. Sanchez stated that he intends to continue in his role “if possible, with even more strength” in a statement released at the Moncloa Palace, the government headquarters in Madrid. He informed the king of his decision and emphasized that the “social mobilization” in his favor over the weekend, with various demonstrations, influenced his choice.
“After days of reflection, my answer is clear”
Sanchez recalled writing a letter to the public last Wednesday, reflecting on whether it was worth “enduring” the attacks his family has faced for 10 years to continue as Prime Minister. “Today, after days of reflection, I have a clear answer,” said the leader, explaining the need to “pause and reflect.” He assured that the letter was not driven by political calculations, acknowledging the pain of living through this situation, which he would not wish on anyone.

“This smear campaign will not end”
Sanchez emphasized that we live in a society that teaches us to move forward “at all costs,” but there are times when the only way to progress is to stop and decide clearly where we want to go. “My wife and I know that this smear campaign will not end, it is serious, but not the most important thing, we can endure it,” added the leader, thanking sincerely for the solidarity and empathy received. He expressed gratitude to the Socialist Party and stated that the mobilization in Spain in recent days was “decisive” for his decision.
